CLASSES

FDMA offers a variety and styles of classes for youth and adults.

Styles Offered

  • BALLET

    Our Ballet Classes are designed for dancers to learn, develop, and master the fundamentals of classical ballet. Beginning ages focus on coordination and learning the basics, as the student progress through our different level’s classes are focused on developing artistry, movement quality, and mastering the technique.

  • POINTE

    Our Pointe Classes are designed for advanced dancers to further develop their technique in ballet on full pointe. Students must be pre-approved for the class, and typically will not begin pointe until around the age of 12 at the earliest.
  • TAP

    Our Tap Classes are designed for students to develop and understand rhythm and beats, while learning how to combine different sounds with our tap shoes. The choreography is usually upbeat and always fun!

    Want to dive more into tap? Join a combo class or tap technique class where dancers will focus on proper technique and skill development while also learning a routine to perform at our FMDA showcases.

    Ages 3-5, enroll in our Pre Dance Tiny Twinkle Ballet/Tap class
    Ages 5-7, enroll in our PC Tiny Glitter Ballet / Tap class
    Ages 6-9 enroll in our level 2 tap technique
    Ages 10+ - please reach out for level assistance

    Other info: At company auditions we ask a poll of dancers auditioning for the company if they are interested in a Company Tap routine that would have the option to compete, if we have 9 or more interested for an age level, we will create a routine for either PC or PPC depending on interest level. **2024-2025 season does not have a tap company, however we have a larger group of students enrolled in tap this season and therefore could have a company that could compete, 2025-2026 season.

  • JAZZ

    Our Jazz classes are designed to train dancers with proper form and technique and education in the Jazz genre, as there are many styles that fall under this umbrella. Our classes focus both on proper skill development, strengthening, and flexibility work. Further, the classes explore different phrase work for dancers to grow artistically through the various styles in jazz.

    Or enroll in Recreational Jazz/ Hip hop, class learn the fundamentals of Jazz Technique and explore choreography in both Jazz & Hip Hop styles. Class has 2 performance opportunities, not required to perform, however encouraged. (more info HERE & how to sign up)
  • CONTEMPORARY

    What is contemporary dance? Contemporary dance, unlike classical dance, is an expressive form of the body based on free movements and improvisation. The distinctive character of contemporary dance lies in the alternation between the force of movement and the release and the importance of the awareness of each gesture. Throughout Contemporary style, you will see many styles incorporated including: ballet, modern, acro, jazz, to name a few. In our contemporary classes/rehearsals dancers will be able to understand what techniques are being blended for the routine they are working on while perfecting the choreography as a team to use proper technique that we are drawing from and to move in unison.

    Join a Ballet and/or Jazz technique class + audition to be part of a Contemporary Performance or Pre-Pro Company for many opportunities to perform or compete.(see company pages for more info on our Performance & Pre-pro Companies HERE 

    Or enroll in a Recreational Ballet/Contemporary Class to work the fundamentals of ballet technique and work on contemporary choreography (more info HERE & how to sign up)

  • HIPHOP

    Our Hip Hop Class is high energy and fused with popping, locking, Bboy tricks and more. We pride ourselves on offering age appropriate classes with clean music and choreography.

    ***wanting to dive into Hip Hop:
    Audition to be part of a Hip Hop Performance Crew or Hip Hop Pre-Pro Crew, for many opportunities to perform or compete. (see company pages for more info on our Performance & Pre-pro Companies HERE

    Or enroll in a Recreational Jazz/Hip Hop Class focused on fundamentals of jazz technique and working on Jazz and Hip Hop choreography. We include jazz in this class for strength and flexibility purposes that will help in the Hip Hop Genre. Class has 2 performance opportunities, not required to perform, however encouraged.   • AERIAL SILKS

    Class is designed to further develop strength, flexibility, and coordination while developing a specific skill set on the aerial silks apparatus. Beginner classes will focus on learning technique on “the knot” and/or “hammock”. Intermediate and advanced classes, will begin to learn/focus on skills without the support of a hammock or knot. All levels will learn to connect multiple skills and be able to perform their skills to a set piece of music.

    *note those who have completed 1 year or equivalent, have moved on to the intermediate level are eligible to compete in one online virtual competition that takes place in June. please reach out for more info. Also, courses can be used to fulfill the required 1 technique only based course for a performance company member.

  • STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY

    This class is designed for all ages and skill levels to further increase strength and flexibility. It is a great class to pair with Aerial Silks, Ballet, or Jazz/Modern/Contemporary. But, also great for athletes that are NON-dancers to cross-train.
  • ACROBATICS

    Our Acrobatics classes are designed to develop strength, flexibility and artistry in the style. Students will learn acrobatic tumbling skills, balances, and partner skills based on appropriate level of difficulty, while also combining dance-like elements and artistic expression through time, space, and energy.

    Recreational Acro Classes are great classes for students to learn proper skill development in a fun and safe environment. Class focuses on floor tumbling, partner skill and group stunts. The class will learn a routine to perform at winter and spring showcase. No, audition is required, sign up based on age, we will do an evaluation to understand where each student is.

    Technique Acro classes focus on conditioning, proper skill development, partner stunts and group stunts. Class requires placement prior to enrollment for new students, returning students will progress and level promote based on skill completion. Class is great for cheer leaders working on specific floor skills, gymnasts that want to find something new or a training that will complement their gymnastics, and dancers that want to learn added skills to enhance their skill set. Class type is required for our competitive acro team. Learn more about our acro team here.  Class will not learn a routine.

  • RECREATIONAL - COMBO CLASSES

    Girls Pre-Dance Ballet /Tap: pink leotard with attached skirt, flesh tone canvas ballet slippers, black patent leather velcro tap shoes, skin tone tights. Hair in a bun or closet thing to. (note: tights and shoes should be the same color and closest to your dancer's skin tone.)

    FUN FACT: Ballet is about the lines of the body and our shoes and tights should match our skin to show the best line. Ballet pink is only seen as a tradition because ballet was codified first in France, a European country that is predominantly caucasian. It is now the norm to break the tradition, so that all dancers lines are accentuated with the use of the proper tights and shoe color for their nationality)

    Boys Pre-Dance Ballet/Tap: White v-neck, black joggers or male tights. Black canvas ballet shoe, white socks. Black patent leather velcro tap shoes. Hair pulled up if long.

    Girls Ballet/Contemporary: black leo or Leo with attached skirt, skirt is required for ballet, but can be detachable if they have another class, if they want to put short on for that. Skin Tone Canvas Ballet Shoes, skin tone tights, hair in bun. (note: tights and shoes should be the same color and closest to your dancer's skin tone.)

    Boys Jazz/Hip Hop: White v-neck, black joggers or sweats. Black sneakers & black jazz shoe

    Modern: All black, barre feet (no shoes), may wear black socks

    Acro: All black, leo or fitted top, and black shorts or leggings. No shoes.

    Silks/Hoop: All black, legging & long sleeve leo or unitard recommended. No jewelry.
  • BALLET or POINTE

    Girls, all levels: Black Leotard (or Company Leotard), skirt, skin tone tights, skin tone canvas ballet slipper. (pointe shoes must be approved by the teacher once purchased at one of the retailers we recommend before you sew your ribbons, if first purchasing shoes.)

    Boys, all levels: Black Joggers or Tights, Which V-neck shirt or tank, tucked in. Black ballet slippers. Please wear black socks.

    Hair: must be in a bun, short hair closest thing to a bun.
  • TAP

    Boys of all levels: black joggers or athletic shorts, white V-neck T-shirt, black tap shoes tie.
    (Bloch or Capezio is recommended for ages 9+, velcro patent leather for pre dance - level 2 / ages 8 & under)

    Girls, All level: Black Leotard or Company Leotard, Athletic Top, Leotard is preferred.
    Black Tap Shoes (Bloch or Capezio is recommended for ages 9+ (level 3 & up) Black patent leather Velcro ages 8 & under (pre-dance-level 2)

    Hair: secured securely away from face.

  • JAZZ/MODERN/CONTEMPORARY

    Girls, All levels: Black Leotard (or FMDA Leotard), Black Athletic Top, leotard is preferred. Black Athletic fitted shorts. Shoes; tan jazz shoes (block pulse brand preferred)

    Boys, All levels: black joggers, shorts, or leggings, plain white T-Shirt or FMDA shirt, Black Jazz Shoes.

    Hair: secured securely away from face. Bun preferred.
  • HIPHOP

    All levels Boys & Girls: black joggers, shorts, or leggings, plain white T-Shirt or FMDA swag. All Black sneakers, not worn outdoors.


  • AERIAL SILKS

    All levels Ladies & Gentleman: full body must be covered, no jewelry. Unitard or long sleeves with leggings or joggers. All black please, this helps with visually seeing if they are wrapped properly.


  • STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY

    Ladies & Gentleman: Athletic wear & sneakers


  • ACROBATICS

    GENTLEMAN of all levels/teams/companies: black joggers or athletic shorts, white V-neck T-shirt, barefoot

    Pre-ACRO: pink leo with attached skirt, barefoot, no socks.

    Levels 1-7: Black Leotard or company/team leo, black shorts or leggings are allowed, but not required. barefoot, no socks, no jewelry


  • SPECIAL NOTES

    Ladies & Gentleman: Please wear all black or FMDA Leo, Crew Shirt, or Tank with either black shorts, FMDA Shorts, or black leggings. Wear the applicable shoes for ALL your routines. Hair securely up as if you were performing. To keep warm, please bring your TEAM jacket and leggings to wear in rehearsals if cold. Please refer to the team code of conduct for further expectations.

    *Important note: we will be sending out info about a list of the specific shoes for all company routines once choreography is complete so you can purchase the correct practice and performance shoes for your company dances.

    When purchasing shoes for practice/ rehearsal brands to use:
    * Bloch Pulse (jazz or musical theater routines or any dances specified)
    * Turners (Capezio, canvas, for any lyrical or other routine specified)
    * Capezio Black Dance socks (contemporary pieces when specified, sometimes we are barefoot)
    * Crew, black sneakers for practice, performance/comp will receive a link.
    * Tap: Bloch flex
    * Note: color depends on costume, always have a practice pair!

    Designed to give adults of all ages, levels and abilities the opportunity to dance and train in a variety of styles and reach their own personal goals. Whether you grew up dancing and want to get back to it or just starting out, one of our classes is meant for you!
  • AERIAL SILKS

    Designed for adults of all ages, levels and abilities to learn skills on the aerial silks using a variety of techniques depending on strength and flexibility. Class will also focus on key muscle group training, stretching, & conditioning.
