Ballet

Our ballet classes are designed for dancers to learn, develop, and master the fundamentals of classical ballet. Beginning ages focus on coordination and learning the basics. As students progress, the focus changes to help dancers develop artistry, movement quality, and technique. 

FMDA is proud to be a member of The Cecchetti Council of America and uses the Cecchetti Method as a framework to our curriculum. In addition to Cecchetti’s rigorous syllabus, FMDA uses teaching methods from The Royal Academy of Dance.

Join a ballet rep class and be part of our annual winter Nutcracker and spring ballet performances. We also offer technique ballet barre classes, which focus on technique only.

Just starting out? Join a Flowy ballet/contemporary class to learn the fundamentals of ballet and a routine for our winter and/or spring performance, which isn’t required but is encouraged.

Pointe

Our pointe classes are designed for advanced dancers to further develop their technique in ballet on full pointe. Dancers begin pre-pointe in preparation around ages 10-11. Various assessments take place when they are 12 to determine when they are ready to begin training on pointe. Other factors are taken into consideration to ensure the safety of full pointe work.

Students must be pre-approved for the class and typically will not begin pointe until around the age of 12, at the earliest. Some dancers who are growing a lot may be recommended to start at a later age. Dancers are required to be enrolled in two ballet classes a week from the following: 1 ballet rep, 1 ballet barre, or a Cecchetti Grade class.

Further, dancers are required to take one session of pre-pointe to prepare. There will be a skill assessment at the end of the session to confirm if they are graduating to a beginner pointe class and then to full pointe.

Pointe shoes need to be approved by the teacher prior to sewing elastic and ribbons.

Tap

Our tap classes are taught in partnership with STL Rhythm Collaborative classes. They are designed for students to develop and understand rhythm and beats while learning how to combine different sounds with our tap shoes. Want to dive more into tap? Ages 3–5: Enroll in our pre-dance Tiny Twinkle ballet/tap class

Ages 5–8: Enroll in Flowy Mini Tap

Ages 9–11: Enroll in Junior Tap

Ages 12+: Enroll in Teen Tap

Other Info:
At company auditions, we ask dancers if they are interested in a Fluid or Motion Company tap routine that would go to competitions. If nine or more dancers are interested at an age level, we will create a competitive Fluid or Motion Company.

Jazz

Our jazz classes focus on proper skill development, strengthening, and flexibility work under the vast jazz genre umbrella. The classes also explore different phrase work for dancers to grow artistically through the various styles in jazz.

Enroll in Flowy jazz/hip hop class to learn the fundamentals of jazz technique and explore choreography in both styles. The class has two performance opportunities. Though you are not required to perform, it is encouraged.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is an expressive form based on free movements and improvisation, and it includes many different styles. Having a strong foundation of ballet technique and jazz technique is critical for the style. Dancers will be able to understand what techniques are being blended for the routine they are working on while perfecting the choreography as a team.

You can also join a ballet barre technique class or jazz leaps/turns/drills technique class to enhance your technique toolbelt for learning contemporary choreography.

Hip Hop

Our hip hop class is high energy and fused with popping, locking, Bboy tricks, and more. We pride ourselves on offering age-appropriate classes with clean music, costuming, and choreography.

Enroll in a Flowy jazz/hip hop class or Flowy hip hop class to learn a routine(s) for our winter and/or spring performance, which isn’t required but is encouraged.

Audition to be part of one of the Fluid or Motion Competitive Hip Hop Crews. Fluid and Motion Competitive Hip Hop Crews have technique requirements.

Aerial Silks

This class is designed to develop strength, flexibility, and coordination while building a specific skillset on the aerial silks apparatus. Beginner classes focus on learning technique on the knot and/or hammock. Intermediate and advanced dancers begin to focus on skills without the support of a hammock or knot. All levels will learn to connect multiple skills and be able to perform to a set piece of music at the end of each session.

Those who have completed one year or equivalent and who have moved on to the Intermediate 1 level are eligible to compete in one online virtual competition that takes place in June. Those at the Intermediate 2 and advanced levels are eligible for an in-person competition.

Acrobatics

Our acrobatics classes are designed to develop strength, flexibility, and artistry. Students will learn acrobatic tumbling skills, balances, and partner skills based on appropriate level of difficulty, while also combining dance-like elements and artistic expression through time, space, and energy.

Flowy acro classes are great for students to learn proper skill development in a fun and safe environment. Class focuses on floor tumbling, partner skill, and group stunts. The class will learn a routine to perform at winter and spring showcases. No audition is required. Sign-up is based on age, and we will do an evaluation to understand where each student is.

Technique acro classes focus on conditioning, proper skill development, partner stunts, and group stunts. The class requires placement prior to enrollment for new students. Returning students will progress and level-promote based on skill completion. This class is great for cheerleaders working on specific floor skills, gymnasts who want to find something new or a training that will complement their gymnastics, and dancers who want to learn added skills to enhance their skillset. Class type is required for our competitive acro team.

Combo

Our combo classes offer dancers ages 3-11 the change to try more than one style in one class, providing them with more in their first dance experiences so they can build foundational skills, try new things, and find their niche!

Dancers ages 3–5 can take ballet/tap combo classes.

Dancers ages 5–11 can take ballet/contemporary or jazz/hip hop combo classes.

It is more beneficial for dancers ages 12 and up, whether beginners or advanced, to focus on one style in one class period.

Musical Theater

This class is geared towards dancers who love Broadway musicals and introduces students to Broadway musicals through dance. The class focuses on teaching students the foundational technique in jazz that you will see in choreography throughout many musicals. Students will also learn how to act with their facial expressions and movement quality while also getting to have fun with lip syncing the music and embodying the characters in the music while dancing.

Class is offered to juniors ages 8–11 and teens 12+. Class has the opportunity to perform in our winter and spring showcases.

Those auditioning for Fluid and Motion Competitive Companies may select this style if they are interested in competitive musical theater. If enough students are interested, we will form a company.
