Fluid Motion Commercial Competitive Company Information

Jazz – Hip Hop – Musical Theater – Character – Tap

Purpose

Commercial Companies are for dancers to develop their artistry and the use of proper technique to master the genres that interest them at a competitive and age‑appropriate level. We set high expectations while also creating a space that encourages balance in life. We focus on individualized training to help better the team as a whole. We believe dancers should be well‑rounded while also having the freedom to focus on the styles that they are most interested in.

Fluid Roster Event Requirements

● Summer Choreography (Fees Due: Aug 1st)
● Summer Intensive (Middle School/Highschoolers only), (Fees Due at time of commitment)
● 3 FMDA Showcases (Dec, Feb, May)
● 1 community performance (Jan or Feb)
● 1 required competition (April)

Motion Roster Event Requirements

● Summer 6‑week session for technique, required
● Summer choreography (Fees Due: Aug 1st)
● Summer intensive required (Fees Due at time of commitment)
● 3 FMDA Showcases (December, February, May)
● 1 community performance
● 4 required competitions (Feb, Mar (2), April)
● Nationals, Invitational (June, optional)

Fluid & Motion Company Training Requirements

* All company dancers ages 7–8: 1 technique class over summer
* Ages 8+: 2 technique classes over summer (Pom may be substituted for Jazz)
* Exception: High schoolers may opt out and complete summer conditioning challenge

● Minis (ages 5–7): 1 Technique Ballet Rep + 1 rehearsal (1.5 hr/week)
  ○ Thursday 5:00–6:30 PM

● Petite (ages 7–8): 1 Technique Ballet Rep + 2 rehearsals (2 hr/week)
  ○ Monday 5:00–6:00 PM & Tuesday 5:30–6:30 PM

● Juniors (ages 9–11): 1 Technique Ballet Rep + 1 Jazz Rep + 2 rehearsals (4.25 hr/week)
  ○ Monday (rehearsals vary by routine) & Tuesday 5:00–8:00 PM (Junior B) or Thursday 5:00–8:00 PM (Junior A)

● Teens (ages 12–14): 1 Technique Ballet Rep + 1 Jazz Rep + 2 rehearsals (4.25 hr/week)
  ○ Monday (times vary by routine) & Tuesday 5:00–8:00 PM

● Seniors (ages 15+): 1 Technique Ballet Rep + 1 Jazz Rep + 2 rehearsals (4.25 hr/week)
  ○ Monday (times vary by routine) & Thursday 5:30–8:30 PM

*Please note: Ballet Rep learns routine for The Fluid Motion Nutcracker & Spring Ballet. Commercial Company members are not required to perform; if not performing, they will still learn and work on Ballet Rep material as a way to strengthen technique for Jazz and Musical Theater. Please indicate on the company commitment form whether they will perform in The Fluid Motion Nutcracker. If in Hip Hop only, dancers ages 12+ may substitute Ballet Rep for Jazz Rep.

Production

One rehearsal for all companies is Line/Production, except Minis & Petites. Production is by audition acceptance only for Minis & Petites. If in Hip Hop only, ages 12+ may substitute Ballet Rep for Jazz Rep.

NEW!

Junior/Petite Line/Production & Teens/Seniors Line/Production. In addition to production by age groups, the full company will learn an “Opening/Closing Number” routine at Intensive. This will be practiced once a month at ALL COMPANY TECHNIQUE. Those not required to attend Intensive must attend “Open/Number All Company Day” (Day 1 & Day 2 of the Fluid Motion Company Intensive). This routine will be performed at showcase events & Liberty Showcase or another community event. It will NOT go to competition.

Fluid & Motion Rosters

Teens and Seniors (Middle School and High School) in Fluid and Motion companies will learn the same routine as a large group by age division and will perform it together at showcase, community events, and the final competition of the season. Dancers will know upon auditions which roster they were accepted onto and may select their company on the audition form. If a dancer shows significant growth mid‑year, we may move her from Fluid to Motion. Dancers will have separate Saturday rehearsals leading up to re‑block.

All ages are required to audition and are placed in a company based on age and skillset.

Readiness, Swings & Inclusivity

If a dancer is not yet ready for a competitive company, we may recommend they join one of our non‑competitive Flowy companies while taking required technique classes. We may also offer the opportunity to be a Swing Company member. Swings meet all technique requirements and may be asked to step in if someone is injured or sick. Swings will perform in the Spring Showcase. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and tailoring each dancer’s training to meet them where they are, helping them reach their fullest potential as both dance athletes and artists.

Solos, Duets, Trios

Solos, Duets, and Trios are optional add‑on routines. Please indicate interest on your audition form. Weekly privates, choreography fees, and competition fees apply. More details can be found HERE. (1 additional technique class is required.)

We set high expectations while also creating a space that encourages balance.

● 3 FMDA Showcases (Dec, Feb, May)

Ballet Rep: Class learns routine for Nutcracker in Winter & routine in Spring Ballet. Conservatory Members are required to participate unless a special circumstance is approved.

Fluid and Motion Rosters will work on the same routine with two versions of formations. Acro Company performs both versions at FMDA Spectacular and receives two extra rehearsals before each competition.

Production

NEW!

Elementary‑Aged Production (Petites/Juniors) and Middle/High School Production (Pre‑Teen/Teens/Seniors). The full company also learns an Opening/Closing Number at Intensive, practiced monthly at All‑Company Technique.

Those not required to do Intensive must attend “Open/Number All Company Day.” Cost: $50 (included in Intensive fee if required).

Readiness, Swings & Inclusivity

If a dancer is not yet ready for a competitive company, we may recommend they join a non‑competitive Flowy company while taking required technique classes. Swing dancers may be asked to step in if someone is injured or sick and will perform in the Spring Showcase.
